The University of Manchester Students’ Union (SU) recently passed a motion that encourages students to use the BSL ‘jazz hands’ sign instead of clapping. Unfortunately, media coverage has not been positive

BBC’s See Hear programme highlights the issue with Hate Crimes against Deaf people

The BBC programme “See Hear” has reported on the shocking increase of hate crime within the disabled and deaf communities. The programme, aired on the 5th September, reported on how incidents of hate crime have risen by a third to more than 80,000 in England and Wales. Over 5,500 of these were disability hate crimes which include attacks on Deaf people.

How concentration fatigue can affect deaf people

Concentration fatigue, or tiredness is a thing! Simply, it’s when you have to concentrate hard on listening, lipreading or signing for a long period of time, and it tires you out. It’s most common in deaf people as we use our eyes more than our other senses, as they’re also our ears.

According to the British Association of Teachers of the Deaf (BATOD), the number of Deaf schools fell from 75-21, 1982-2016. From 2011-18, there was a 14% decline in teachers of the Deaf and a 31% increase in demand.
